JOSEPH WONG

VIDEOGRAPHER. DESIGNER. RESEARCHER.

ABOUT ME

I am a doctoral student at the University of California, Irvine who studies Teaching, Learning, and Educational Improvement (TLEI) while specializing in Digital Learning and Media under my advisor, Dr. Lindsey Richland.

I am researcher motivated by questions at the intersection of science education, digital media, and higher-order thinking. More specifically, I am interested in how instructional media technologies such as immersive cinema, virtual and augmented reality, and digital storytelling, can improve student motivation, engagement, and content acquisition. My career goal is to bridge together my passion for videography with science education to design effective learning experiences representative of today’s 21st century student learning behaviors.

Over the last 4 years, I worked with Dr. Brad Hughes in the Hughes Media & Design Lab at UC Irvine as the Director of Videography for Science Education Media on the National Science Foundation-funded project ESCAPE. Here, I oversaw the 4K Ultra HD pre-production, production, and post-production digital media workflows for online teacher professional development trainings that integrate arts with science education. This curriculum is currently implemented to hundreds of third, fourth, and fifth-grade students in Title I elementary schools across Los Angeles and Orange County school districts.

Prior to ESCAPE, I worked at the California Academy of Sciences  as an informal science educator. Working alongside the visualization team in the Morrison Planetarium, I recorded, edited, and produced original full-dome and portable dome productions for both museum guests and Title I middle school students. I also worked as a planetarium host and museum exhibitor, teaching the Academy’s guest about various scientific phenomena from planetary sciences to marine habitats.
